My kind of social justice
The Ontario government has hatched a plan to deny driver's liscences to kids who drop out of school. In effect, if you want to operate a motor vehicle, you will need to stay in school till you graduate.
This is great stuff. In Ontario, the dropout rate is an unacceptable 30% and is as high as 50% in some areas. Without a high school education, a person can't even begin to take steps towards self-sufficiency as an adult.
I'm sick and tired of hearing people like Libby Davies and the rest of the "social justice" crowd give lectures on poverty and put the rest of us who work hard and have made good choices in life on guilt trips. The bottom line is that a lot of people in society are poor not because of bad luck or because of the evils of capitalism but often because they made poor choices ... like dropping out of school.
This kind of law is TRUE social justice.
Thumbs up to the Ontario government for recognizing the power of incentives and showing teenagers that there are consequences for not getting an education.

Of course, we can't let the Charter get in the way of common sense.
Show me how a licence to drive is a Charter right. Please. I am dying to hear it.
Gerard Kennedy would be surprised to hear anyone describe him as a right winger, don't you think?
How would it be struck down if not by a Charter challenge?
