Garneau under fire
Quebec Liberal candidate Marc Garneau is in trouble for saying that if Quebec voted to separate, he would move away. He is also in trouble for saying that he thinks a lot of Quebecois don't really understand the consequences of separation, and he likened it to the unintended consequences of the US invasion of Iraq.
See here.
My question is this: So what if he doesn't want to live under a Pequiste president or prime minister? Do the separatists demand 100% loyalty to Quebec or else you are a "vendu" or a sell-out? And is it not true that a lot of Quebecois still think they can use the Canadian dollar, Canadian passport, and keep their jobs in the civil service of Canada even after Quebec votes to separate?
What is even more disappointing than the outrage over Marc Garneau's refusal to drink the Quebec nationalist kool-aid is that Paul Martin didn't stand by him.
I applaud Marc Garneau for being a Quebecois who is also a proud Canadian and also for being a Liberal politician who isn't afraid to tell the separatists the truth.
I also hope he wins his seat (but I doubt he will after this).
