Year In Review - The Top 15 Newsmakers of 2005 - #5

In July of this year, Karla Homolka was released from prison after serving 12 years.

The sentence was a plea-bargain which was agreed to by the Crown in exchange for testimony against Karla's husband, Paul Bernardo, in the trials for the murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy. After the conviction of Bernardo, tapes were found which showed that Homolka's victim act was a ruse. In fact, she was a willing participant in not only these killings but the Christmas 1990 killing of her sister Tammy and also the rape of Jane Doe, an unnamed woman who has not come forward publicly.

Upon her release, Homolka was interviewed by Radio Canada and expressed little to no remorse. She also roped a hard-luck hardware store operator in Quebec to give her a job which didn't quite pan out after he told the press that he believed she was still a danger to society, in part due to her budding romance with another convicted killer. Shortly after this incident, her lesbian lover in prison came forward and speculated on Homolka's sexual orientation (to the confusion of basically everyone).

Conditions were imposed on Homolka release which were recently struck down.

Truly a loathesome figure who we (unfortunately) have not yet heard the last of.
