Debates

The first of two back-to-back debates is tonight in Vancouver.

Conventional wisdom is that Harper has the most to win, or lose. I am not so sure about that. As this blogger points out, it is truly the NDP that seems to be in deep trouble.

Their performance in this election is crucial for the future of socialist democracy in Canada. Are they destined to become a rump party?

For tonight, anyway, it's really the Duceppe vs. Martin show. Even if Harper impresses, which I think he will, and Layton will probably do well, too, Quebecers really only have two options.

Are the NDP not already a rump? 19 seats isn't much. Though it was enough to gain concessions in a minority goverment.

Anti-Quebec? No way. Debates are to help voters decide who would make the best PM. Manning ran candidates across the country. Duceppe doesn't. Racism? Hardly.

No, in 1993, they ran in only some Quebec ridings, I think, but mathematically, Manning could have been PM. Duceppe cannot make any such claim.

The leader's debates are to see who would make the best Prime Minister of Canada. Duceppe is not in the running for that job, ergo, why is he there? Yes, you should be running to lead the country.

Better yet, why even have debates in the first place? They are a media circus, turn most people off and increase cynicism among the voting public.

Well said, Lyons. I am wondering, however, how this will play with the Conservative grassroots. Any thoughts?
