Tuesday digest

- The next time you hear someone arguing that the US and their allies are responsible for all the world's ills, be sure to remind that person that Palestinian youth seem to prefer Israeli captivity to West Bank freedom.

- Members of the diversity lobby aside, it's time to make it clear that there's no women's section in Canada.

- A look at the state of free speech in the Middle East.

- It's long past time we start reducing our dependence on imported oil.

- I don't understand why everyone is on the India bandwagon. Even if they double their GDP per capita, they'll still be worth less than $7,000 per head. They still have a hell of a long way to go.

- And let this be a lesson to all of you: don't let your six-year old ride the ferris wheel alone.

I think there are a few reasons for business people to take a second look at both India and Mexico. In our obsession with China many have overlooked these countries as alternative investment candidates.

China's government is so corrupt that you really need a local partner to set up any type of business. As I understand it, this opens you to a world of hurt. I don't think the same is necessary in either India or Mexico, where the labour is just as cheap.

Indians all speak English and the middle class benefits from one of the best education systems in the world. The Chinese speak many different languages and have only recently started to see improvements in their education system.

Unlike China, Mexico is close to North American markets, the government tends to cooperate with our own, and I don't know that the workers are that much less skilled than people in Shenzhen, China.

Just a few thoughts.
