Album Review: "Super Colossal" by Joe Satriani (2006)

Picked this baby, the latest release from one of rock's most creative guitarists, up at The Turning Point yesterday, which happens to be Ottawa's best used CD store by a longshot.

I've given it a few spins so far, and I just can't get my head around it, and I mean that in a good way. Every song is different, not only from each other but also from Satch's previous works. It's experimental and melodic at the same time while not being overly commercial like "The Extremist" and still retaining that signature Satriani sound. It's a good sign for fans that he has not lost his creative edge as he approaches 50. Of the six Satriani albums I own, I'd put this one right behind "Strange Beautiful Music". I'm sure it will only grow on me with time.

Fans of the man will love this disc, and probably give it a 9/10. Others will probably rate it at about a 7/10. For the unitiated who are looking for something different, you should give this a go. You'll have no doubt that Rolling Stone is a total joke after hearing Joe Satriani's work (there's no way that any of RS' top 20 axemeisters Kurt Cobain, Johnny Ramone and Jack White can hold a candle to the man) and it will expand your musical horizons.

Bonus for a pretty cool album cover.

About the Turning Point, I halfheartedly agree with you that it's Ottawa's best source for used CDs. Sure most of them are priced between $9.95 and $10.95 (+ taxes) and they do give you a buy 12 get 1 free CD after a while.

I think A&H at the corner of Cooper and Bank provides a better bang for your buck, as you get your 2nd CD at 1/2 price or buy 3 get 1 free. Coupled with the Stereo Trading Post a few doors down, and you get good used copies for $4 each or find more recent titles at $10 (inc. tax).

All 3 of these stores represent the best used music Ottawa has to offer.

Nothing beats the Turning Point for selection and quality. Case in point: Satriani was released yesterday and it already was on the Turning Point's shelf. At A nd H, the merchandise is beat up and the staff irritating. The Stereo Trading Post has a few good diamonds in the rough but you have to look.

The selection at Compact, now at Bank and Gloucester, is weak but growing.

I agree with the selection/quality of the discs purchased at TP, it's also the first place I look at when I go shopping for that shit. However price is a factor for most, especially in the used CD department, that's why the mentioning of A&H and STP deserved credit for having lower prices. It all boils down for a) finding what you want and b) ponying up for it.
