Album Review: "Confessions On a Dance Floor" by Madonna
Picked this one up for my fiancé the other day and have given it a few spins. Madonna gets back to her Manhattan club roots with this disc which is (deservedly) selling truckloads, in contrast to her politically charged "American Life" album from 2003.
This album sounds like the worthy and proper successor to 1998's "Ray of Light". I liken it to a consistently fast-tempo version of Daft Punk, with Madonna's instantly recognizable vocals, of course. On that note, a lot of people say that Madonna doesn't have a great voice. I disagree. I think she's an excellent singer and her chops are solid on this album as well.
Unfortunately, the album art makes her look like she's trying out for amateur night at your local low-rent peeler bar, and the lyrics are at times ridiculous (she actually uses the word "dork" to rhyme with New York). But that's hair-splitting. If you are heading out to some, ahem, winter parties this December and are looking for something to get you pumped up while you are getting prepped at home or are in the car on your way over, this will do quite nicely.
Overall, I give this disc 7/10.
