Friday digest

- You know why I find it hard to get revved up about Canadian politics? Here are a couple of reasons, First, we're subject to minority rule. Second, any frank analysis of the limitations of our biggest social program (by far) is met with hoots of derision, name-calling, and paranoid hand-wringing, making it basically impossible to deal with what is our most pressing issue as a country in any substantive fashion.

- An absolutely pathetic display last night by the Ottawa Senators in a 6-0 loss in their home opener to their rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Heartless, gutless performances like this are why I can't make an emotional investment in this team. The problem is that this franchise doesn't care enough about losing.

- Light it up, baby!

Sens suck. Last night's game was a disgrace, but you can't put the entire blame on Gerber. Their fans suck too, the "real fans" come from other parts of the Ottawa valley in case you haven't noticed.

At least the Canucks showed some clout against the Red Wings last night.

Hammer, no doubt the Sens chewed the root last night, but slow down hommes ... you're starting to sound like an uber-reactionary Leaf fan.

It's game 2 (and game one was a convincing win). There are 80 left, and then the real season starts.

Hockey country IS starting to sound depressingly like Toronto, where every detail is put under a microscope and over anyalysed.

Let's just take a step back and look at the big picture. The Sens are still deep and a real threat to win the cup. But the reality is that about 8 other teams can make the same claim.

The three H's of Canadian identity: Hockey, Health Care and Hysterical anit-Americanism.

And the fourth: Horton's.

Greenchief, losing a close game is one thing, but complete impotence in their home opener against the Leafs? That spells trouble, especially getting shut out and losing by six.

One exception, B, is fans of the NJD because we demand a consistent standard of excellence night in and night out regardless of the amount of sweat put into the affair.

I don't see any Cup rings on Darcy Tucker's hands, for instance.

However, I'm a bit of a hypocrite on that front because my favourite Jay is the gritty and high strung yet basically useless Greg Zaun.

Hammer, hate to burst your bubble, but the Devs success has absolutely nothing to do with the high standards demanded by their fans, but everything to do with Lou Lamerello, Marty B., and the solid defence core they built around him for years.

If I remember correctly, they played to half-empty stadiums for years.

And did you really think the Sens were gonna go all year without getting smoked at least once?

Sens being smoked by the Leafs 6-0 in the home opener is inexcusable.

The Devs will always play to half-empty stadiums.

As for the rest, I'm just blowing smoke and using B's observations to bash the Blue Team.
